Speaker chassis: For the passion for your (own) sound

MONACOR has stood for DIY and repairing instead of throwing away for decades.

The best thing is when we can inspire new hobbyists for the DIY passion. Or when we save the life of a speaker with our chassis. We know: The optimal sound is subjective. Sure, a smooth frequency response is beautiful. Positioning perfectly in line with the directivity pattern, listening in the sweet spot, is simply a pleasure. But for many, it is even more satisfying to build a Hi-Fi speaker precisely the way they have been dreaming of. Are you already a hobbyist, tinkerer, sound experimenter yourself? Or would you like to get started with this wonderful hobby? Or do you regularly repair speakers? Then you know that well thought-out construction plans only work out when the right components are in a good, cost-efficient relation to the final performance. On this page we present our large variety of speaker chassis.

By the way: We have more DIY accessories such as coils, controls and crossover networks.

Our catalogue for loudspeaker chassis

The speaker chassis is the heart of a speaker

The speaker chassis includes:

  • the speaker basket
  • the magnet
  • the moving coil

The speaker chassis is the speaker without the housing and the crossover network. We offer you an extensive selection of speaker chassis that you can use to build your own Hi-Fi speakers or PA speakers. To help beginners get their bearings, we explain below the most important terms for the first steps.

Are you looking for a horn chassis with an extremely fine-resolution sound pattern in the high-frequency range? Our RBT-35SR

RBT-35SR s a true ribbon tweeter with a neodymium magnet system for the most demanding high-frequency PA applications. The horn chassis stands out with an extremely light, smooth, non-embossed aluminium sandwich membrane. It consists of an aluminium foil that is completely infused with the sound signal. The result: A finely detailed reproduction of the high frequencies and brilliance. The low impedance of this membrane is transformed to 5 to 8 ohms by a built-in high-quality transformer. This ribbon tweeter impresses with an extremely fine-resolution sound pattern in the high-frequency range. Continuous development means that these ribbons can now be used with crossover frequencies from 2500 Hz upwards. They are the best choice when it comes to premium Hi-Fi speakers or studio monitors. With a horn front attachment, this speaker chassis achieves a very high sound pressure level and constant bundling behaviour. Caution: Ribbons must not be operated without a crossover network! We supply a mounting flange and a protective grille with the chassis.

  • Impedance (Z): 7 Ω

  • Frequency range: 1100 to 30000 Hz

  • rec. separation freq. (f max.) (12 dB/oct.): > 3000 Hz

  • Power rating (RMS): 12 W

  • Music power rating (MAX): 25 W

  • Sound pressure level: 96 dB/W/m

Are you looking for a Hi-Fi ribbon tweeter suitable for home cinema? Our RBT-95SR

Ribbon tweeter like RBT-95SR give you a brilliant, finely defined high-frequency reproduction through a speaker chassis. The efficiency is exceptionally high. RBT-95SR works with a magnetostatic speaker with a horn front attachment and, compared to RBT-95 and RBT-10, is significantly more resilient. With its neodymium magnet system, the tweeter chassis is ideal for 3- and 4-way speakers or as a tweeter supplement for full range speakers. The chassis is refined with a longitudinally ribbed, slightly curved plastic front panel. RBT-95SR is part of the 2DOT1 kit.

  • Impedance (Z): 8 Ω

  • Frequency range: fx-22000 Hz

  • Resonant frequency (fs): 3500 Hz

  • Rec. separation freq. (f max.) (12 dB/oct.): 5000 Hz

  • Power rating (RMS): 40 W

  • Music power rating (MAX): 70 W

  • Sound pressure level: 98 dB/W/m

More about RBT-95SR

„The RBT-95SR, MONACOR delivers a pleasingly inexpensive magnetostat tweeter that promises excellent quality in the top high frequency range. [It] offers a squeaky clean frequency response that goes very linearly up to almost 20 kilohertz."

— Hobby HiFi 03/2013 on the RBT-95SR

„In our audio room, we were amazed when we put the system to the test. The small speakers seemed as if they were playing back the entire low-frequency component.“

— Klang+Ton 02/2013 on the RBT 95SR

Yes and no. The larger the diameter of a speaker, the lower the frequencies it can reproduce. And the bigger, the harder it is to reproduce high frequencies with the chassis.

Are you looking for Hi-Fi (bass) midrange speakers that can be used flexibly? Our SPH-5M

The SPH-5M is a carefully designed long-excursion Hi-Fi bass-midrange speaker. It has a dampened, low-resonance polypropylene cone and a stable, beautifully shaped die-cast aluminium basket with 6-hole screw connection. SPH-5M can be used universally in compact bass reflex, TML and closed speaker systems. One reason for this is that the chassis has a magnet system with a pole core hole and a protruding rear pole plate. Harmonises very well SPH-5M also as a midrange speaker in 3-way speakers.

  • Impedance (Z): 8 Ω

  • Frequency range: f3-4000Hz

  • Resonant frequency (fs): 45 Hz

  • Power rating (RMS): 40 W

  • Music power rating (MAX): 80 W

— Test report of Hobby Hi-Fi 04/2012

For beginners and people who want to rediscover: Common terms related to speakers in practice

RMS (Power rating)

RMS is the abbreviation for "Root Mean Square". The RMS indicates how consistently the speakers work in the entire frequency range without sacrificing sound quality. In short, it is the kinetic resistance of the membrane suspension and is the result of the TSP measurement.

Sound pressure (sometimes also "Sensitivity")

The sound pressure level indicates how loud the speaker is with a 1 watt amplification when the volume is measured 1 metre away from the speaker. Very easy to remember: 1 watt power at 1 metre distance.

Frequency response

In our magazine you can find a detailed article about frequency response . Why is that important? Each speaker produces certain frequencies that are louder or quieter than others. The frequency response shows how the speaker handles different frequencies.

Test speakers – without an acoustic room and measuring devices?

Of course you can simply test a speaker with your favourite record and try to judge whether it sounds satisfactory. We have two tips for more demanding users. Listen:

such as heavy metal recordings from the late 80s and early 90s: do the kick drum and bass have a decent, juicy "punch" or do they sound bloated and "droning"?

with very deep, rather subtle but powerful basses. This can be a pipe organ or a cello going down to 20 Hz. Contrabassoon and bass tuba can also be enough: Is the low bass here good and pleasant to hear, or is it distorted?

A range as varied as our customers

Of course, we can only show a small selection of our speakers here. You can find all the components too in our speaker technology category. If you are already a registered customer you can also find our chassis in the web shop. Furthermore, our team is at your service any time with advice and support.
