There are many reasons why you or your customers might want to wall-mount a sound system's speakers. Wall mounting helps fit speakers into smaller spaces and protects the speakers from curious children and pets. It's also an easy way to place smaller satellite speakers at the right height to enjoy optimum sound quality. Whatever the reason: Speakers at ear level create a completely different sound experience than the large-area sound reinforcement effect from ceiling speakers. Our sound projectors are designed for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor applications. Such applications range from clear, easily understandable announcements to rich background music. Our flattest temptation: The wall speakers of our ESP series

Our slimmest solutions are literally hidden in the ESP series: The ESP-134/WS, with a depth of only 38 mm, are so flat that they are hardly noticeable on the wall. This speaker is almost as inconspicuous as a wall speaker, but it is mounted on the wall rather than in it. Thanks to a 2-way system with a neodymium mid-bass driver and a dome tweeter, it offers a very round and clear sound, even in a lounge or a café space. Wall speakers that blend into the environment are often more desirable in such settings. Yet, doctor's surgeries are also typical areas of application in which speaker boxes are desired to be more discreet, inconspicuous, and at ear level. This is a matter of conceptual design, however.


In consultation or in planning, you need to consider: Should the speakers be part of the interior or should they remain discretely unobtrusive?

Reminder: EN-54 is a set of European standards covering product and application guidelines for fire alarm systems as well as voice alarm systems. A/B speakers make it possible to reliably provide redundant sound to an area via two separate (A/B) lines. The sound system remains actively functional if one of the two lines fails. The prerequisite is that both the A and the B line be connected and functional at each loudspeaker position.

IP ratings can be found on almost all electronic devices. IP degrees of protection, also known as ingress protection, are regulated in the international standard EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992, European IEC 60509:1989). These three standards define the degree of protection against entry of foreign bodies such as moisture, liquids, dirt and dust. Each number following "IP" has a specific meaning and provides information about the degree of protection:

  • First digit: Indicates the degree of protection against moving parts, as well as the protection of enclosed equipment against ingress of foreign objects.

ELA wall speakers: In the corner?

Wall speakers and all other playback devices do not belong in the corners of rooms. The reason: the acoustic phenomenon of standing waves. Standing waves are also called "room resonances" or "natural pitches". They occur at certain frequencies:

  1. ... where the dimensions of the room are equal to half the wavelength
  2. ... and at integer multiples of these frequencies.

An example: A room with two parallel walls, each five meters long, generates room modes at 34, 68, 102 and 136 Hz. While in many cases desired resonances can be a good thing, acoustically they are not optimal. They emphasise certain frequencies, which leads to booming in the bass range and unpleasant effects in the lower midrange. Basically, the smaller the room, the more unpleasant it sounds. What does this have to do with corners? The problem is worse near the boundaries of the space. The standing waves that cause room resonance create areas of high sound pressure near the walls, floor, and ceiling. And in the corners, the resonances from two or even all three dimensions of the room come together. A speaker placed close to a boundary or in a corner will easily excite standing waves. The best advice: Move the speakers out of the corners and away from the walls.

Mount wall speakers at least half a meter from the nearest wall. This minimises sound reflections that make the sound image unclear.

Make sure there are no objects between your speakers and your ears. Pay attention to ensuring a symmetrical arrangement of speakers and furniture. The goal is to minimise sound reflections as much as possible.


For which scenarios are ELA wall speakers the best choice?

You could rephrase the question this way: When should speakers be hung on the wall and when not? The first answer, of course, is whenever ceiling-mounted speakers are out of the question. This is because ceiling speakers usually need suspended ceilings. And, of course, there is a big difference between music splashing down on the audience's heads from above, and music coming straight into their ears from the side.

1. ELA wall-mounted loudspeakers produce high sound quality when placed in the right position

Sometimes it's good for the soul to sit and listen to music – and do nothing else. Or, at least nothing much else. Enjoy a drink or a snack. If you have a space...

  • that you wish to fill with high-quality music,

  • in which you know exactly where the audience is sitting,

… you should consider flush-installed in-wall speakers instead of ceiling speakers. When the wall speakers are hung at ear level, they offer a more direct sound field and sweet spots for particularly good sound imaging. This gives you more of the feeling that the band is live on stage right in front of you.

 

2. ELA wall speakers are more versatile for satisfying more discerning standards

Wall speakers tend to come in many different sizes and power levels. They can also often be pivoted and/or tilted. This is important for flexibility, because not every type of speaker will sound (equally) good in every area. Smaller speakers may be appropriate for a small retail space, but will sound weak or faint in retail spaces with lots of customers and shelving. In certain spaces, a tilt is important. Space dimensions, content and materials affect the sound. Sound can bounce off exposed walls, large furniture, and bare floors. Carpets, on the other hand, absorb sound. You should also take a good look at the ceiling when it comes to wall speakers: Vaulted ceilings create a more open atmosphere, while narrower, lower-ceilinged rooms create an intimate feel.

 

3. Wall speakers can be retrofitted with a relatively small budget

Flush-installed in-wall speakers and ceiling speakers are always more invasive than speakers that are surface mounted on the wall and ceiling. Wall loudspeakers can be a relatively quick and uncomplicated solution, especially when rooms are intended for other uses than originally planned over time.

Sound reinforcement technology is everywhere: in our homes, at our workplaces, in city centres, at garden parties and in shopping malls. But is that actually good? Our experience is that sound reinforcement is only beneficial if it fits the overall design concept. Simply mounting wall loudspeakers, hooking them up to an ELA amplifier and playing something in any direction is not enough. That's why we always encourage you to think of sound reinforcement not as an end in itself, but as a well thought-out tool for a nicer atmosphere:

  1. What is the goal of your sound reinforcement? to motivate athletes? to induce customers to linger longer? to underline a certain themed area?
  2. How prominent should or may the music be?
  3. How much budget do you have for sound reinforcement technology?

4 reasons in favour of passive wall speakers

With active wall speakers, the ELA amplifier comes with a suitable power amplifier and harmonises perfectly with the wall speakers themselves. Nevertheless, there are good reasons for passive wall speakers:

  1. Passive wall speakers are usually more cost-efficient than their active brothers because they require less material. And high economic efficiency is usually one of the most important requirements our customers have.
  2. The 100-volt sound system is easy and efficient. A small cable cross-section, no worries about impedances, no additional sockets like there are for active wall speakers. It's plain and simple.
  3. The central control of passive wall speakers via an ELA amplifier is convenient, as the control centre for the sound system can then be placed exactly where you want it. And no one can tamper with a single wall speaker without authorisation.
  4. Rugged ELA amplifiers. With such equipment, you can inexpensively upgrade and retrofit your system with passive wall speakers, or at the very least continue using the ELA amplifier.

 

Wall speakers and amplifiers: Good equipment must fit together

For best results, pair the speakers with an amplifier or receiver that not only delivers the right performance, but also has the features you need. For example, a mute function or volume level control for each channel given a multi-room sound reinforcement system. Manufacturers typically specify a range of amplification output needed to properly power each device. For example, a speaker may require 30 to 100 watts of power output to function well. On the other hand, the watt specification for speakers is primarily a rating of load capacity: How much electrical power can the speaker handle? If you are running a multi-channel system, you should stick to speakers from the same brand. That way, you know that the devices harmonise and were measured with the same standard.
