Built-in speakers: Well chosen is half the victory

How to choose exactly the right built-in speakers – and which ones you can get from MONACOR

They like to come in packs, do their job stoically, and stay loyally with us for a long time: Good built-in speakers are the bread and butter in many indoor PA applications. But bread and butter are also available in many different grades of quality. We offer installers, planners and architects the solid bread for every day and the high-quality, elaborately optimised bread for special applications. And because we are not just a dealer, but a solution provider, you can always discover more about the areas of application and combinations of our built-in speakers here.

We are happy to advise installers and planners on implementing a sound system concept with our built-in speakers and combining it with other PA technology.

100 volt built-in speakers: The all-round talent for wide, cost-effective PA applications

100-volt technology is the perennial favourite for public address systems. It is flexible, easy to implement and often particularly cost-efficient. This cost efficiency relates to the individual speaker. Why are we mentioning this? Because we don't just use 100-volt technology as a "cheapest possible" solution. Rather, it is an opportunity. It's an opportunity to use a few more built-in speakers to create a finer, more even soundscape. Because we live in a time when 100 volt built-in speakers can play high-quality music. And then it's good if you, as the installer and planner, don't have to fight over every single built-in speaker as a cost item. Well-designed built-in speakers are the best option for sound system projects that require large-scale, reliable, commercial sound systems. Our built-in speakers like the EDL-11TW/SW can do much more than background music.

Classic scenarios for our 100 volt built-in speakers:

Built-in speakers are often the secret heroes of the store or gastronomy concept

Sound systems in gastronomy and retail trade have one thing in common: They must support the concept of the business. Experience quality is also becoming more and more important in retail. In gastronomy, too, it's not only the eyes that count, but also the ears. And of course it depends on the product which music will boost sales, but the quality of the sound system has to be high, whether it's a steakhouse or a boutique. When it comes to background music, there is no such thing as "better than nothing". Well thought-out background music influences consumer behaviour through genre, tempo and volume in terms of business.

Built-in speakers with low-impedance technology: For home cinema, bars and other scenarios that require foreground music

The days when built-in speakers simply couldn't keep a party going are over. Our range includes built-in speakers whose frequency response  allow for high-quality sound in shops and recreational facilities. We also rely on built-in speakers that can play in both arenas: In the low-impedance range and can be switched to 100-volt transmission. It is important to us: To deliver what our installation and planning partners want. We keep abreast of the latest market developments. And it tells us: affordable, stable, powerful sound. Like our EDL-82HQ.

A/B built-in speakers: Two in one for security

Most A/B built-in speakers are EN54-24 certified. An A/B built-in speaker simplifies installation and the optics in some sound system scenarios. An example: A very small room, e.g. a toilet of 5 square metres. Without A/B built-in speakers, you would need two built-in speakers for a voice alarm system. The designation A/B refers to the redundant design of a voice alarm system. The standard requires that the failure of a single speaker circuit does not result in a breakdown of the entire alarm area. You can achieve this with A/B wiring. It is designed redundantly, i.e. "dual": One circuit drives a series of speakers, which in turn are connected to an (own) PA amplifier. At the same time, there is another set of speakers with their own circuit and their own PA amplifier.

We carry built-in speakers in which two separate speaker systems are already installed.

EDL-224ABC: 100 volt A/B built-in speaker with EN-54-24 certification

  • 2 independent speaker systems

  • Very high efficiency (92 dB/W/m)

  • High maximum volume

  • Metal housing

  • Fire protection cover

  • Quick-mounting facility

  • 3 Power taps via pressure terminals

  • Test: Ball-impact resistance in accordance with DIN 18 032, Part 3

Built-in speaker in accordance with EN-54: For voice alarm systems

We also carry several PA built-in speakers with EN-54-24 certification for systems with A/B speaker distribution. You can also use PA built-in speakers with EN-54-24 certification for projects in accordance with EN 50849, which is again a system standard. The EN 50849 standard is the current one (as of April 2021) and in turn corresponds to the most important requirements of the outdated EN 60849 standard. The latter, however, is more up-to-date. For the (lapsed) standard EN 60849 there was a transition period until March 2020. You can find a current overview of standards in sound system technology that we can recommend on the website of the German Electro and Digital Industry Association.

Reminder: Building law requirements for a voice alarm system require the use of components in accordance with the EN54 standard. This also applies to the speakers, which can save lives in emergencies. In an emergency, reliably functioning public address systems reach every corner of the building with life-saving announcements.

Why MONACOR? Because we offer solutions instead of just products

Whether you are looking for sound system technology for a standard solution or for a complex system – we will first listen to you carefully. We want to offer our business partners more than just a mere sale of speakers. Your project is our project. Installers often come to us who have enormous specialist knowledge of the technology, but require good advice on the planning of ceiling speakers or the positioning of wall-mounted speakers. In that case, we never leave our customers out in the cold, and we sit down with them: Floor plan, building services plan, our experts, you and coffee. Or architects and expert planners call us, with detailed designs already in hand. They then want a recommendation as to which built-in speakers are suitable, for example for background music, for announcements or for high-quality background music for the shopping experience. We don't need to support them with the planning, but with the specific product selection. What was that again about the frequency response or the directivity pattern?

We are also technical consultants and planning assistants. Our Datanorm* datasets make planning and calculation easier for you. This is how we ensure that you have a secure investment.

*Datanorm is a file format for the data exchange of item master data between product suppliers, specialist wholesalers and handicraft businesses, find out more here.

We consistently test, optimise and discard (if necessary) built-in speakers if they do not meet the requirements of our customers

Success or failure in commercial sound systems with built-in speakers is a balancing act between quality and cost. A lot has happened in recent years: Built-in speakers are getting cheaper and cheaper. Why? Simply because it can be done. But we don't want to go down the path of cheaper, cheaper, cheaper. Yes, cost efficiency is important for planners and installers when it comes to advice and implementation. But we have quality standards that we will not compromise on. This is another reason why we develop our own products or put imports to the acid test. That is why we have developed and internalised an aggressive quality policy. What exactly does that mean?

We test new speakers in our acoustics laboratory, and in our workshop we dismantle them right down to the last screw.

Acoustics specialists like Frank Kuhl investigate what the built-in speakers can do, where there are weaknesses and whether they are acceptable in the price range or the intended area of application. That might mean the frequency response needs to be even more linear. Or it might mean too much material was used for the result achieved by the speaker. No matter what it is: If our engineers are not satisfied with a built-in speaker, it will not be part of our range.

Our range of different built-in speakers covers almost every imaginable sound system scenario. Whether you want the slimmest possible solution for a small youth centre or a large-scale sound system for a shopping centre or a swimming pool – you can make it happen with our built-in speakers. If we can advise or support you with the planning, we would be happy to do so! After all: Your project is our project.
